By: E&P Staff The Pilot in North Carolina is rolling out a new program over the next few weeks to get more local people online by offering free wireless Internet access.
The new project, to be implemented in the state's Sandhills region, will eventually provide Wireless Fidelity (WiFi) Internet access to all of Moore County. The first stage of the plan will be implemented in Southern Pines.
"The Pilot's mission is to serve Moore County," publisher David Woronoff said in the paper, "and we think the technology has advanced to the point that we can help bind the community together in a dynamic and compelling way with The Pilot's products and Internet service."
The newspaper plans to first install a WiFi transmitter on the roof of its building in downtown Southern Pines. Once test prove successful on the equipment, the service will be extended to other parts of the community.
