By: E&P Staff Michael Hengel, who previously served as editor of the Pine Bluff (Ark.) Commercial, is returning to the newspaper as its publisher.
Hengel served for four years as editor of the Commercial, from 1987-1991. He most recently served as publisher of the Shawnee (Okla.) News-Star.
Hengel's experience includes stints at newspapers around the country, serving as publisher in Holland, Mich., from 2001-2006 and editing newspapers in Ontario, Calif., and Vallejo, Calif. In addition, he served as publisher of the Log Cabin Democrat in Conway, Ark., and at a Forth Smith, Ark., paper.
?The best newspapers serve the community by providing lots of news and opinion on local issues,? Hengel said in a statement. ?As publisher of the Commercial, I?ll work to publish as much local news as possible and to encourage readers to submit lots of local news and information.?
He succeeds Charles Berry, who is retiring after 18 years at the paper. Though Berry is not officially retiring until the end of March, Hengel will begin work at the Commercial in mid-February.
