St. Paul, Minn. - The Pioneer Press announced today that Mike Burbach, a veteran editor and, since 2006, opinion editor of the Pioneer Press, will assume the top leadership post in its newsroom next week.
Burbach, 52, succeeds Thom Fladung, who earlier this year became managing editor of the Cleveland Plain Dealer after having led the Pioneer Press newsroom since 2005.
"The Pioneer Press is committed to St. Paul and the east metro, and so am I," said Burbach. "Our communities are full of interesting people. They get involved, they make interesting things happen, and they consume news and information with a passion. This is a great place to be in the news business, and I'm fortunate to have the chance to help build on the Pioneer Press' long history of distinctive, useful reporting."
Burbach graduated from the University of North Dakota in 1982, where he was editor of the student paper. He's been the editor at newspapers in Minot, N.D., and Columbus, Ga., and managing editor of papers in Aberdeen, S.D., and Akron, Ohio. Through the years, he's been active in industry efforts related to openness in government and diversity. He and his wife and three children live in St. Paul.
"Mike Burbach was born in Nebraska and went to high school and college in North Dakota, and has worked in St. Paul for the last five years. He knows the region and, due to his active involvement in the East Metro for the last half-decade, he knows this metro area. In earlier years Mike was: paper boy, grocery boy, meat cutter, farm and highway laborer, house framer, waiter and bartender. Experience matters, including - perhaps especially - the real world variety. All of us at the Pioneer Press now look to Mike to contribute to our multi-year, industry leading circulation performance," said Pioneer Press Publisher Guy Gilmore.
