'Pittsburgh Post-Gazette' Former Senior Editor/Editorial Writer Dies

By: Clarke Thomas, a retired senior editor and editorial writer at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, has died.

The newspaper says Thomas died Sunday at UPMC Presbyterian hospital in Pittsburgh. He was 83.

The Post-Gazette hired Thomas to write editorials in 1971. Thomas was also known for chronicling the city's history, and its diverse neighborhoods and ethnic groups.

He wrote three books. "They Came to Pittsburgh," was a collection of Post-Gazette stories on the city's ethnic group. "Witness to the Fifties: The Pittsburgh Photographic Library, 1950-1953," was a book of photographs and historic commentary on the city. Clarke also wrote a book about the newspaper's coverage of the city called "Front-Page Pittsburgh: Two Hundred Years of the Post-Gazette."

The McCabe Funeral Home in Pittsburgh is handling arrangements. A memorial service will be held Thursday.
