In what was described as a symbolic action Monday, 38 editors and reporters walked out of the downtown Pittsburgh Post-Gazette building, according to local ABC affiliate WTAE.
Columnist Sally Kalson, a member of the Newspaper Guild bargaining committee, told WTAE that the afternoon walkout was meant only to show what it would be like if the paper cuts up to 180 newsroom jobs.
The Block Communications paper wants to offer buyouts to some staffers, but is also considering layoffs, if necessary, according to Kalson.
"We are giving them millions of dollars in savings for the next three years, and we understand the need for that," Kaslon told WTAE.
Negotiations are in progress, while the Guild continues to work under a contract extension.
