'PLAIN DEALER' REPORTERS BARRED FROM NEWS CONFERENCE

Cleveland Mayor Michael R. White held a press conference
Wednesday, but The Plain Dealer wasn't invited. City
officials barred two reporters and a photographer from attending
a news conference at an elementary school, according to a report
in Thursday's Plain Dealer.

The press conference ban is the latest in a long-running dispute
between City Hall and the Plain Dealer. In the March 19
issue of E&P, White said the newspaper "willfully and
premeditatively trashes every journalistic ethic on an ongoing
and continuous basis." Plain Dealer Editor Douglas C.
Clifton responded by saying that White "has the strangest
operating style that I've ever seen."

White never notifies the newspaper of his press conferences, and
has never sat for a one-on-one interview with the Plain
Dealer's City Hall reporter, according to the March
E&P story.

On Wednesday, the mayor's press secretary told Plain
Dealer reporters that the news conference was "invitation
only." When politics reporter Mark Naymik showed up anyway, he
was escorted from the school by the mayor's press secretary. A
second Plain Dealer reporter and a photographer were also
escorted from the event.
