Police Chief Spots Suspect -- His Son -- In Newspaper Photo

By: As he leafed through the newspaper on Wednesday morning, the acting police chief in Moore Township thought there was something familiar about the bank robbery suspect shown in a grainy surveillance photograph.

Studying the suspect?s slender build, the way he carried himself and the red baseball cap he wore, Chief James Cavallo came to a terrible realization: the suspect was his son.

And as painful as it was, he turned him in.

?I knew I had to do it,? Chief Cavallo said Friday. ?There was no question about it.?

James Cavallo Jr., 28, was arrested Wednesday and charged with robbery, theft and receiving stolen property. After making what the police said was a videotaped confession, he was jailed on $500,000 bail.

Chief Cavallo said his son had told him that he was high on cocaine on Tuesday when he went into a local bank, handed the teller a note claiming he had a gun and left with $6,000.

The chief, accompanied by a detective, had gone to his son?s house that afternoon and confronted him. The younger man admitted to the robbery, apologized and began crying, the chief said.

The chief said jail might be the best thing. ?I believe that being arrested is the first step in intervention for a lot of people,? he said.
