By: Jim Rosenberg The break-in and theft of cash at The Caledonian-Record, St. Johnsbury, Vt., early last month remains under investigation.
"We took the window out where the break occurred" and sent it to the crime lab, Chief Richard Leighton of the St. Johnsbury Police Department told E&P.
The burglary is believed to have taken place some time between the Saturday-night departure of then-Managing Editor Gail Montany and the Sunday-morning arrival of Circulation Manager Judy Burke, who discovered the money missing from a locked desk drawer in her department.
At the time, Montany characterized the loss only as "a lot of money" that ordinarily would be expected to be placed in the newspaper's safe. Montany told E&P she thought she was the last staffer in the building when she left the night of Sept. 8, and that no other valuables left in plain view were missing (E&P Online, Sept. 10).
"We have a few possible suspects," Leighton said, adding that he could say nothing more at this point.
