Polish Group: Garry Trudeau a 'Bigot' for 'Doonesbury' Character

Posted
By: E&P Staff The anti-bigotry committee of a Polish-American group has claimed that syndicated cartoonist Garry Trudeau "demeaned Polish-Americans" with a character in one of his recent strips, the New York Daily News reports today.

New York branch of the Polish American Congress attempted this week to present Trudeau with a bogus certificate labeling him "Authentic Bigot" for his May 14 comic, which featured a character named Kaminski, reports the paper. The character graduates from college only by battling "the worst skill deficiencies in reaching the minimum threshold of achievement."

"It's the old tried-and-true stereotypical Polish joke -- and we do feel it was quite obvious what Trudeau intended to do," Anti-Bigotry Committee Chairman was quoted as saying.

Trudeau responded to the charge in the article, saying "The characters in 'Doonesbury' come from a wide variety of backgrounds. The one thing they have in common is that they are deeply flawed, thus reflecting reality."
