American voters sick from caustic ads — newspapers provide cure
"I'm not a witch," "she's a whore," "he doesn't have the cojones," You'd expect to find these lines on the walls of an inner-city high school toilet stall, not from 'deep thinking,' 'problem solving' political candidates vying for high ranking government positions.
As ridiculous, belittling and irresponsible ads blanket the airwaves and Internet, American voters are gasping for truth, desperately seeking a trusted source for information.
Huffington Post doesn't have the answers, lacking local coverage, nor do the thousands of 'paid' political bloggers Twittering and Facebooking their experienced and valid insight to anyone willing to listen. The Swine flu vaccine is found in newspaper's ink and the election season offers newspapers the ideal climate to shine and assume the role of the citizen's guard dog, protecting objectivity and truth. Newspapers must sink their investigative fangs into every candidate and every proposition, not releasing their grip until all facts are shaken loose, exposed and printed in easy to read and uncomplicated news stories. Voters want to know the problems that plagued the previous administration and office holders. They want to know what it will take to correct budget deficits and rampant corruption. Voters want newspapers to expose special interest groups, powerful unions and lobbyists — they want political report cards to compare and evaluate facts. Voters don't want their guard dog wagging its tail for any politician, political party or organization. Voters want newspapers meaner than Jim Croce's junkyard dog.
Guard duty also means newspapers must end their current practice of supporting certain politicians and proposition. How on earth can readers take newspapers 'objectivity' seriously if they print and promote their ballot choices. Give citizens balanced reporting and factual points so they can make independent informed decisions. Newspapers that reveal their political preferences, reveal their inability to remain neutral, undermining their credibility for unbiased reporting. Newspapers must take the high road and leave the liberal and conservative bickering to the network and cable news channels, separating themselves from the entertaining, but useless bitch fights.
Newspapers are voters only real hope for truth. Politicians have proven over and over again they don't represent the people, and our government continues to demonstrate they don't even know who the people are any more. It's time for newspapers to embrace their role in a free society and represent the voice of the people. CALLING ALL NEWSPAPERS! Load your pens, rally your reporters and prepare for battle. Blast prime time TV, the Internet and papers with your battle plans - Tell voters you are joining forces with them in their fight to return power to 'WE THE PEOPLE.'
