Announcement from Editorial Director for California Julia Marsh, California Policy Editor Debra Kahn, and Executive Editor, Platforms and Operations, Joe Schatz:

Team —

We're very excited to announce a key hire for a central component of our California expansion.

Blanca Begert starts Aug. 1 as our inaugural California climate reporter. She will anchor our new California Climate newsletter, chronicling how climate change is driving political and policy shifts, reshaping industries and impacting the environment in the Golden State.

The new daily newsletter, launching Aug. 14, will obsess over the political and legislative dynamics surrounding climate change in California and the key characters dealing with them, from state and local lawmakers to Silicon Valley tech companies and Napa Valley vineyards.

Our climate coverage — a key pillar of our expansion plans in California — will be the state’s most comprehensive and engaging, following a range of critical topics from the effects of climate change on energy development to how it influences water accessibility.

Blanca will report to California policy editor Debra Kahn, who will edit the newsletter. It will feature regular contributions from other California reporters including Alex Nieves, Wes Venteicher and Camille von Kaenel as well as coverage from across our federal teams.

Blanca comes to us from Grist, where she honed her California climate chops as a fellow. She has also reported from Peru on Indigenous land dispossession via a Pulitzer Center fellowship and edited environmental content at the Southern California PBS affiliate KCET. Raised in Miami and a graduate of Brown University, Blanca has a master's of environmental science from the Yale School of the Environment. She is based in Los Angeles, but plans to relocate to Sacramento soon. She enjoys surfing all along the California coast.

Please join us in welcoming and congratulating Blanca.
