By: E&P Staff The St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times has won the National Press Foundation's 2008 Excellence in Online Journalism Award for its fact-checking Web site, PolitiFact.com.
Launched in August 2007 by the Times and Congressional Quarterly, PolitiFact.com tracks accuracy in politics to inform voters. Since its launch, the Web site has published more than 750 Truth-O-Meter ratings on what was said during the 2008 presidential campaign.
Previous winners of the Excellence in Online Journalism Award include CNN.com, NYTimes.com, WashingtonPost.com, the Center for Public Integrity, Bloomberg.com and National Geographic Online. This year?s award will be presented Feb. 10 at NPF?s annual awards dinner.
PolitiFact.com has also been honored with a Knight Batten Award for Innovation in Journalism, a Digital Edge Award for Best Overall News Site from the Newspaper Association of America and first place for Online Political Reporting in the Green Eyeshade Awards. It was named one of PC World magazine?s ?100 Incredibly Useful and Interesting Web sites? in 2008.
