Poll: Most Americans Want Iraq Pullout, No Matter What

Posted
By: E&P Staff As U.S. deaths in Iraq reach the milestone 2,000 figure, few newspapers on their editorial pages have called for the start of an American pullout in that country. But a new Rasmussen Reports survey, released today, is just the latest poll to reveal wide public support for this action.

Fifty-three percent of Americans now say that getting U.S. soldiers home as soon as possible is more important than making sure "Iraq becomes a peaceful nation enjoying freedom and democracy." This is the first time that a majority of Americans have held that view, Rasmussen said. A month go the figure stood at 47%.

The pro-pullout majority hold this view even though, the survey shows, they believe that such a withdrawal may make things worse in Iraq.

Other pollsters, including Gallup, have shown that about 6 in 10 Americans urge the start of a withdrawal of forces.

The Rasmussen survey also shows that just 38% insuring a peaceful and free Iraq is the top priority.

The survey was based on inteviews with 2000 adults, with projected accuracy at plus or minus 3 percentage point.

Other findings:

--Forty-four percent of Americans view the U.S. military as a liberating force in Iraq. Thirty-eight percent view them as an occupying force.

--Forty-five percent of Americans say that the War in Iraq is part of the War on Terror. Forty-one percent take the opposite view and say Iraq is a distraction from the War on Terror.

Rasmussen Reports calls itself the nation's most accurate polling firm during the Presidential election and the only one to project both Bush and Kerry's vote total within half a percentage point of the actual outcome.
