By: E&P Staff Over half of all Americans want to know Judge John G. Roberts' position on abortion before the Senate votes on whether to put him on the Supreme Court, according to a national poll released today. A solid majority of women feel this way.
At the same time, those who know enough about Roberts to have an opinion of him view him favorably by about a 2-1 margin, the AP-Ipsos poll also found. But this represents a minority of all.
The survey found 52 percent believe he should give his position on the matter before lawmakers vote on him, while 42 percent said he should not. Sixty percent of women want an answer on this. That's the same number for Democrats who feel that way.
Most of those surveyed -- 59% -- said they haven't heard enough about Roberts to form an opinion, but 25% said they viewed him favorably and 14% unfavorably.
Overall, the sample was inclined, at this early point, to favor confirmation, 47% to 24%.
Men are more likely than women to favor confirmation and Republicans more likely than Democrats and independents.
The poll of 752 adults was conducted Tuesday and Wednesday by Ipsos, an international polling firm, and has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
