Poll Will Determine 'Doonesbury' Character's College Choice

Posted
By: E&P Staff Doonesbury.com is conducting a poll asking readers where the Alex character in Garry Trudeau's "Doonesbury" strip should go to college.

The online survey -- which runs through May 22 -- offers site visitors the choice of Rensselaer, Cornell, or MIT for Alex. The poll summarizes the three schools this way:

"Rensselaer: Biotech, nanotech, infotech -- it's the country's oldest tech school, and it's building a world-class supercomputing center. Plus they're really into undergrad ed. Then again, no one's heard of 'em and the winters are grim.

"Cornell: Hey, they aced the Thevenin-Norton question, and Alex shouldn't second-guess her gut, which said 'go there.' They're into patents, and they're transnational. On the other hand, it's even more upstate New York than Rensselaer, plus Wolfowitz went there.

"MIT: It's got unimpeachable academic cred, and an anti-authoritarian ethos -- the term 'hacker' was born there, and the place is notorious for high-end pranks. Plus they've got the Media Lab and a liveable big city. Downside: an overabundance of all-geek, all-the-time tude, topped off with a geeky nomer."

"Doonesbury" appears in about 1,400 newspapers via Universal Press Syndicate.
