'Post-Tribune' Building Up for Sale as Sun-Times Media Group Sheds Real Estate

By: E&P Staff In the latest in a series of real estate sales by cash-strapped Sun-Times Media Group, the Post-Tribune is putting up its Merrillville, Ind., office building up for sale.

Also for sale is the building in Merrillville's downtown square that houses the Crown Point Star and Shopping News.

In a memo to employees, Post-Tribune Publisher Murdoch Davis said the sale is strictly a real estate deal. Parent Sun-Times Media Group "made a strategic decision some time ago to move away from having capital tied up in real estate, so we can focus more on our core businesses," Davis said in the memo reported in an unbylined story by the paper.

The flagship Chicago Sun-Times sold its downtown building along the Chicago River to Donald Trump, who built a skyscraper on the site. The newspaper operates out of rented space nearby.

Sun-Times Media Group has also put on market several buildings in Illinois that housed its papers in Joliet, Aurora, Elgin and Naperville.

"I emphasize to you -- and ask you to emphasize to any clients, contacts or readers who may have questions -- that we are not leaving our communities or changing our fundamental business in doing this," Murdoch said in the memo. "We remain committed to maintaining a local office and staff within the communities we serve, including those in which we already rent offices, such as Valparaiso and Gary."
