By: E&P Staff The Post-Tribune of Northwest Indiana announced plans for nine seniority-based lay offs today.

Eight union staffers and one nonunion staffer will be cut, according to union President Lori Caldwell. Two nonunion employees in the advertising department were also cut.

The editorial staff was notified of the cuts on Thursday. According to the labor agreement, the Post-Tribune?s management and the Gary Newspaper Guild Local 14, the union representing the newsroom employees, will have two weeks to negotiate the terms of the lay offs to lessen their impact.

The Sun Times Media Group, formerly Hollinger International, has owned the Post-Tribune since early 1998. Lay offs at the paper are just part of the company?s actions to cut expenses and improve its finances.
