Postal Service Mulls Rate Hike

Posted
By: Todd Shields The U.S. Postal Service has unveiled details of its request for a third rate hike since January, and the news is mixed, which is to say better than expected.

The service wants a 1.7% increase in the in-county rate that small newspapers often use. But the proposed increases average 10.4% for out-of-county rates used to ship newspapers and magazines. And rate hikes could go as high as 9.1% for standard mail that newspapers use for total market coverage.

It will take at least nine months for the independent Postal Rate Commission to rule on the request.
