By: E&P Staff A six-hour electrical outage that hit just as the Sunday final edition was being printed at The Fresno (Calif.) Bee's production plant delayed delivery of some 90,000 copies for many hours.
The Bee said power provided by Pacific Gas & Electric Co. was interrupted at its West Fresno plant at about 1 a.m. Power was restored about six hours later, the newspaper said in a Monday morning article, but the need to reboot equipment delayed production for several more hours.
The electrical outage also shut down telephone lines into the paper's customer service department, the paper said. "Though additional lines and personnel were added, customer service personnel and managers were not able to timely handle the volume of calls," the paper said.
In some neighborhoods affected by the delay, subscribers received preprinted sections in the morning, with the A-section, local news and sports sections delivered later in the day. Other customers received the entire package later in the day.
