A July 9 publishers note posted on RomeSentinel.com informed readers of the Daily Sentinel, Rome, N.Y., that press problems had "indefinitely delayed delivery" of that day's paper.
Updates reported that, by mutual emergency agreement, the Observer-Dispatch in nearby Utica printed the last 2,000 of the Sentinel's 10,000 Friday copies, which were trucked to Rome, bundled by route for delivery, and possibly delivered that evening, depending on carrier availability. In the meantime, newsracks outside the Sentinel were replenished with Friday editions.
Sentinel Publisher Stephen B. Waters explained that power surges seemed to have damaged both the main press motor and the back-up motor. A new, 100-horsepower motor shipped from Fort Smith, Ark., is expected July 10, when the damaged 100-hp press motor will be removed and sent to be rewound by Auburn (N.Y.) Armature Inc., according to Waters. He added that the press motor blower will be replaced first thing Monday morning, and the back-up 75-hp motor will be rewound at a later date.
Waters promised further updates for Saturday and Sunday and Sunday production.
