Power Surge Empties Detroit Dailies' Plant

Posted
By: Jim Rosenberg Employees were evacuated from the plant that prints the Detroit Free Press and Detroit News for about an hour earlier this afternoon after an electrical surge caused a shutdown.

An externally caused power spike will cause the plant's system to automatically switch from one main transformer to another, but a failure in the switch-over, Detroit Media Partnership Executive Vice President and General Manager Susie Ellwood told E&P, caused the overheating and a smoky condition.

The incident occurred shortly after 1:00 PM in an electrical room on the Sterling Heights building's fourth floor, according to an account on Freep.com.

No one was injured, Ellwood said in late afternoon, adding that "we're getting the presses up and running." They were not operating at the time of the electrical problem and were not damaged. But systems from air conditioning to platemaking had to be checked and functioning first, said Ellwood.
