Powerless Penn. Paper Publishes

Posted
By: E&P Staff The Review, Towanda, Pa., reports today that a thunder storm killed power to its newsroom for three hours Tuesday night, preventing use of its computers to complete yesterday's and transmit pages to the nearby printing plant.

The 9,000-circulation daily did publish, however, thanks to cooperation with Times-Shamrock Communications sister operations at the Scranton Times-Tribune and Shamokin News-Item and to the company's just-implemented Unisys editorial system (E&P, Jan. 2005), which is designed to link all the group's papers.

Editors at the other Times-Shamrock papers accessed Towanda's database and, in phone contact with Review editors, completed their pages and sent them to the plant in Towanda Township, which still had electrical power.

The Review reports that its production crew "was able to make up enough time so that the press run and bundling of papers for home-delivery personnel ended only 10 minutes behind schedule."

The paper quoted its editor, Ronald W. Hosie, calling it "a remarkable achievement, going from three hours without power late in the shift to a mere 10 minutes late." Hosie added, "It was the first time the power and flexibility of our new computer system could be put to the test in an emergency."
