Poynter Institute Names New Managing Director

By: E&P Staff Butch Ward has assumed an expanded role at The Poynter Institute as its managing director. Ward will continue to teach while leading the Institute's business departments, including marketing, development, information technology and human resources.

Prior to joining Poynter in 2005 as a Distinguished Poynter Fellow, Ward served as managing editor of the Baltimore (Md.) News-American and The Philadelphia Inquirer. He also worked for two years on the business side at the Inquirer, including a year spent as assistant to the publisher.

Previously, Poynter President Karen B. Dunlap held the position of managing director. The operations role was redefined to allow the president to focus on areas of growth at the Institute.
