ppi Media Puts Magazine, Newspaper into One Workflow at German Publisher

Having a single workflow for two products was the decisive factor when Medienhaus Schwäbischer Verlag, Leutkirch, Germany, chose to upgrade its PlanPag central planning and production system from manroland subsidiary ppi Media to include the magazine package and InDesign plug-in LayoutLink for designing and producing editorial pages and advertorials.

The company's product diversification and Planpag's enhanced functions for placing ads and editorial content in the bleed played a major role in its decision.

The upgrade will enable Schwäbischer Verlag to centrally plan and produce its newspapers and magazinelike products. Calling it "quite a complex task for our software," ppi Media Chief Operating Officer Norbert Ohl said in a statement: "Layout options such as bleed ads are not available for newspapers, and this poses a real challenge for many system solutions. Two separate workflows, one for newspaper editions and one for magazines, are far too time-consuming, labor- and cost-intensive."

PlanPag manages and processes the net size of an ad during placement. If ads have a bleed flag, they can be placed automatically or dragged into the trim area outside the page grid and repositioned any time. Since redundant bleed allowances on the inside of a page are not automatically trimmed until assembly, it must be ensured that ads, elements and editorial content with a bleed flag have a constant circumferential bleed.

"For us the implications are clear: greater flexibility, easier planning and higher automation," said Klaus Zellmer, head of MSG Media Service.
