Praise for Sargent's Cartoon Tribute to Lady Bird Johnson

Posted
By: E&P Staff Lyndon Nugent, grandson of Lady Bird Johnson, said a Ben Sargent drawing in the Austin American-Statesman was his favorite of the many editorial cartoons paying tribute to the late first lady.

Sargent's July 13 cartoon shows a field of bluebonnet flowers talking about Johnson, who died July 11. One bluebonnet asks if there are bluebonnets in heaven, and another replies, "There will be now."

Johnson was known for initiating highway-beautification programs. As part of that effort, she convinced the state government of Texas to plant bluebonnets and other wildflowers along roads.

Sargent's cartoons are distributed by Universal Press Syndicate.
