By: E&P Staff Since President Bush's re-election, the press in both the United States and Canada have had a field day with jokes about Democrats heading north to escape ?four more years.?
But there has been some semi-serious coverage as well, including a recent Vancouver Sun story based on interviews with Americans from the Northwest who attended a seminar on immigration to Canada. The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported that Canada's immigration Web site received more than 180,000 visitors on a single day after the election.
But what would Democrats get themselves in for if they did head north, eh?
According to the Gallup Organization, recent polling in Canada shows that, with a few exceptions, ?U.S. Democrats are closer to Canadians in their views on many moral issues than to non-Democrats in their own country. ... On such controversial topics as the death penalty, abortion, doctor-assisted suicide, and wearing animal fur, Canadians and Democrats tend to see eye to eye.?
They are also closer together on views of homosexual behavior, premarital sex, and embryonic stem cell research.
For example, despite the cold weather, only 57% of Canadians feel wearing animal fur is morally acceptable, with U.S. Democrats at 58%, while nearly three in four GOPers feel that way.
On abortion, 53% of Canadian find it morally acceptable, along with 49% of Dems, but only 27% of Republicans go along with it.
