By: E&P Staff St. Louis-based Pressline Services Inc. has reached an agreement to overhaul the St. Petersburg Times' nine presses in a multi-year project that aims to raise productivity, improve quality, and reduce waste.
Pressline will upgrade the presses to Technotrans dampeners, install Rockwell Automation PlantView/PressView controls and consoles, replace existing DC drives and motors with AC drives and motors for unit-level shaftless operation, improve motorized sidelay and circumferential adjustments, and modify the equipment to allow printing of multiple web widths.
With the new controls and shaftless drive, acceptable print quality will be achieved faster and with less manual presetting, according to Pressline. Shaftless design also will permit simultaneous plating of units. More precise color registration will be possible using preset technology at the console.
