Los Angeles Times pressman Ed Padgett has reported on his blog that he was suspended yesterday afternoon and faces possible termination for writing about production problems late last week at the Times (E&P Online June 21, 22).
Padgett's post reads: "I was told I had been warned in the past regarding my blogging, but I was only warned about broadcasting circulation numbers and nothing else."
As former Times journalist Kevin Roderick noted on his own LA Observed blog, even the newspaper covered its production problems, which delayed deliveries to many subscribers, some of whom reportedly received copies with no sports section the morning after the Los Angeles Lakers won the NBA championship.
The difficulties arose just days after printing ended at the Times' Orange County plant, where presses were restarted briefly and which will continue to serve as back-up to the downtown Olympic facility, according to Times Communications Vice President Nancy Sullivan.
Asked about Padgett's employment status, Sullivan said "our policy is not to comment on internal employee matters."
