Pressroom Fire in Georgia Causes Delays

Posted
By: Meg Campbell An early morning fire in a dust collector forced workers at the Columbus, Ga., Ledger-Enquirer to stop the presses and evacuate the building, resulting in a five-hour delivery delay for subscribers.

The fire began at approximately 6:20 a.m. when "a spark of unknown origin ignited the paper dust inside the collector," according to a report on the Ledger-Enquirer?s Web site. The building's fire alarm and automatic sprinklers went off, and the paper?s employees left the building to wait for the fire department.

The fire was put out in about 30 minutes, although the smoke lingered longer. The presses, which do not need the dust collector to run, resumed printing at about 9:30 a.m. Six thousand copies that had been printed before the paper were delivered to retail locations, and at about 11 a.m., paper employees, including the publisher, company directors, and even reporters and advertising representatives, began making home deliveries.
