By: E&P Staff Presteligence released version 2.5 of NewsXtreme this week, with upgrades at The Herald-Palladium, St. Joseph, Mich., and The Repository, Canton, Ohio. Customer-site upgrades will continue elsewhere in the following weeks.
The new release features behind-the-scenes and user-interface enhancements. The new production view, which can be filtered based on security access and user preferences, offers color-coded status tracking of pages, plates, and ads, as well as the ability to make unforeseen scheduling changes. An approval view displays only those pages or plates that must be proofed before being imaged.
Newly tabbed-style menus in the plate-configuration and product-scheduling wizards make template editing easier and faster, with customized control of margins, gutters, and default dinky placement. A result of customer feedback, these new elements enhance the user's experience. Also, 64-bit processing support was added to exploit the latest in computer hardware, and built-in database management simplifies IT administration.
For electronic tearsheets and editions, customers can use a new module of NewsXtreme that automatically produces and transmits reduced-size, Web-ready PDF files to application service providers. The Repository will use the module as it implements Presteligence's Adinfinitum to provide e-tearsheets to its advertisers. The paper also has deployed Presteligence's Ink-Miser ink-optimization software, which it now runs in full production after the 2.5 upgrade. It projects monthly ink savings of $3,000 to $4,000.
Behind the scenes, the system now logs all actions on files by user -- for instance, who accepts/rejects or changes priorities. Presteligence also built in more flexibility to NewsXtreme to offer customized, scalable solutions to newspapers of all sizes.
