By: E&P Staff United Media announced Friday that United Feature Syndicate will begin distributing Scott Stantis' comic strip "Prickly City" effective July 12. Universal Press Syndicate had previously syndicated the strip.
Stantis, who is also the editorial cartoonist for The Birmingham (Ala.) News, began drawing "Prickly City" in 2004. The cartoon follows the adventures of Carmen, a young libertarian-conservative, and Winslow, a coyote pup with political ambitions.
The humor in the strip is created by the friction between the two. Carmen is often annoyed at Winslow's impulsiveness and condescension, while Winslow, who is perplexed as to why Carmen is not a liberal feminist. The strip runs in more than 100 U.S. newspapers.
Stantis, a California native, currently resides in Hoover, Ala. He has been the Birmingham News' editorial cartoonist since 1996, and served as President of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists for the year 2003-04. He also produces a weekly editorial cartoon for USA Today.
His work has been featured in Newsweek, U.S. News and World Report, and New York's Daily News.
