Printing-Plate Collection Includes Early Will Eisner Comics

By: E&P Staff A New Jersey man has about 5,000 printing plates that include two almost-complete collections of Will Eisner's first published comic strips: "Harry Karry" and "Uncle Otto," according to a story in the Courier-Post of Cherry Hill, N.J.

Eisner (1917-2005) went on to create "The Spirit" comic insert that was distributed in newspapers from 1940 to 1952 -- and inspired a movie coming this December. He was also a comic-book cartoonist, graphic novelist, and teacher.

The printing-plates collector is Joe Getsinger, 59, of Woodbury Heights. "I found these 'Harry Karry' plates by a 'Willis B. Rensie,' which is Eisner spelled backward," he said.

It's unusual for so many plates to have survived because they were often melted down, noted the Courier-Post article by Kristy Davies.
