The Richmond Times-Dispatch reported Thursday that Wallens Ridge

State Prison Warden Stanley Young has filed a $14 million

defamation suit against a dozen Connecticut defendents, alleging

they have portrayed him as a racist. Three Connecticut newspapers

- the New Haven Advocate, Hartford Courant, and Connecticut Post -

are among the defendants.

Young made his charges after activists criticized the prison under

his control. There have been accusations of racism and abuse, and

reports that Young has a display of Civil War memorabilia in his

office.

The Connecticut papers have investigated because about 480 inmates

from that state are being held at the Virginia facility. Last

month, a 20-year-old inmate from Connecticut serving a 2.5-year

drug sentence committed suicide in front of a corrections officer.
