By: E&P Staff Financial Times Deutschland, co-published by Gruner und Jahr and Pearson, has selected the NewsWay workflow solution from ProImage.
"The software integrates pre-press systems and automates end-to-end production of both editorial and advertising," Financial Times Deutschland IT Director Udo Schewietzek said in a statement.
Printing more than 100,000 copies at four locations across Germany, the FTD sought to RIP pages at each site, differently if required, to maintain consistent print quality across the different presses. This was accomplished because through NewsWay the operation could switch from a pre-separated PostScript workflow to composite PDFs.
NewsWay manages page transmission to the print sites via FTP. The Internet provides back-up.
Workflow is divided between editorial and production. For editorial, NewsWay accepts files from the Linopress production system, creates impositions and places pages in Approval Queues for each different product, permitting checking before output, load balancing and platemaking.
For advertising production, the option to test-RIP ads can eliminate errors and ensure quality. Proofing and approval is then undertaken at FTD's editorial office in Hamburg.
Departments producing other work (e.g., special reports, magazines) that once worked separately from the newspaper have become an integral part of the overall publishing environment using NewsWay.
