Protec Produces 'Destak,' Portugal's First Free Newspaper

Posted
By: E&P Staff Destak, Portugal's first free newspaper, is using Milenium cross-media solutions from Protec, Madrid, Spain, to improve content and production management. It began publishing all its pages with Milenium without first producing a test edition.

Launched in 2001, Destak appeared as a weekly until late 2004. Today it distributes 127,000 copies per day, in Lisbon and Porto.

Writers use one database, belonging to Lisbon newspaper Correio da Manh?. Thanks to the low-speed optimization protocol for slow lines, used in all Protec applications, staffers can view and edit from Destak's remote news desk. This protocol will enable the paper to extend its closing times while reducing communication costs.

The free daily, mainly aimed at a young city audience, is owned by Metro News Publicaciones, a company in which the Cofina Group has a 49% holding.
