Publisher John Newhouse Leaves Mississippi Newspaper

By: John Newhouse has left his job as president and publisher of The Clarion-Ledger in Jackson, Miss., the newspaper reported Tuesday on its Web site.

Newhouse had held the job since August 2005. A successor was not immediately named.

Executive editor Ronnie Agnew said the departure won't affect the newspaper's push to improve methods of news delivery and coverage.

"John believed in his managers and he basically allowed his department heads to manage their departments," Agnew said. "Essentially, it was my job to keep him posted about some of the changes that we're making. But it was absolutely his call to give us the authority to do it. He wasn't going to micromanage you along the way."

The Clarion-Ledger is owned by Gannett Co., based in Virginia.

Agnew said he believes Gannett will appoint a new publisher soon.
