The Darlington native succeeded her father as the paper?s publisher. Prior to that she worked on graphic design for the newspaper, skills and knowledge she brought to her tenure as publisher. The South Carolina Press Association also recognized her achievement in design.

Thomas attended the University of Virginia in Charlottesville before getting her bachelor?s degree in English from the University of South Carolina. In 1995 she co-founded Five O?Clock Friday, an arts and entertainment magazine.

?We shared the same office for a long time and although there was a divider between us, it was never up,? said Neil Hopwood, editor of the News & Press in an article in the newspaper. ?If you weren?t doing what you were supposed to be doing, she wasn?t shy about letting you know, but she also was a person that knew how to laugh.?

Outside her work at the paper, Thomas was a golfer and a member of the equestrian community. She is survived by her mother, brother, and niece. Contributions may be made to the Darlington County Humane Society.
