By: E&P Staff Rich Connor, who replaced Patrick McHugh last week as the new president and publisher of the Times Leader of Wilkes-Barre, Pa., will now become the newspaper's editor as well, the Times Leader reported today. Connor replaces Matt Golas, who was editor of the paper since April 2005.

Connor had previously been publisher and editor of the Times Leader from 1978 to 1986. He returned to the paper after McHugh announced his resignation on July 20, not long after the Times Leader was sold by Knight Ridder to the McClatchy Co. McClatchy is now in the process of reselling the paper to Connor and several other investors.

The Times Leader reported that the replacement of Golas was not personal, according to Connor, although Golas was somewhat emotional at his departure from the paper.

Connor told the Times Leader that he planned to put more emphasis on local news. He also hinted that he was going to evaluate the staff of the newsroom to see whether other changes in personnel would be necessary, but added that none were planned at the moment.
