By: The owners of two newspapers have failed to get a judge to speed the disclosure of documents in a lawsuit aiming to keep two former publishers from printing a competing paper.
Surry County Superior Court Judge Ronald Spivey denied the motion by The Mount Airy News and The Tribune of Elkin, each owned by Heartland Publications.
The newspapers wanted former publishers Mike Milligan and Rebel Good to turn over documents. Heartland attorneys also wanted to take depositions. Attorneys for Milligan and Good argue that there's no need for expedited discovery.
The lawsuit claims Milligan and Good hurt their former newspapers when they took key employees and business information to start The Messenger. Milligan is the former publisher of the Mount Airy News, and Good is the former publisher of The Tribune.
The lawsuit also alleges the two were planning the new publication while still working at the newspapers, causing employees to walk out on June 18th.
