Pulitzer Prize Deadline Monday -- Awards Announced April 20

Posted
By: Joe Strupp The deadline for Pulitzer Prize submissions for the upcoming 2009 awards is Monday, according to Pulitzer officials. Technically, the entries must be in by Feb. 1, but with that date landing on Sunday, Pulitzer officials are giving an extra day.

The 14 juries that meet to decide the finalists for the journalism categories will gather on March 2, 3 and 4, with the final winners announced on Monday, April 20.

Finalists, of course, are never publicly revealed in advance, but often leak out.

Among the major changes to this year's competition is an expansion to allow reporting from Web-only news outlets. The new rules state such entries cannot be from Web sites linked to non-newspaper print publications or broadcast outlets.

"While broadening the competition, the Board stressed that all entered material -- whether online or in print -- should come from United States newspapers or news organizations that publish at least weekly, that are 'primarily dedicated to original news reporting and coverage of ongoing stories,' and that 'adhere to the highest journalistic principles,'? A Pulitzer announcement of the change in December stated.
