By: E&P Staff Last week, Sheri Fink of ProPublica won the Pulitzer Prize for her account in The New York Times Magazine of the chaos and life-and-death choices at a New Orleans hospital isolated by Hurricane Katrina's floodwaters. Next week, ProPublica will be presented with a Dart Award for the piece.
ProPublica won the 2010 Dart along with the St. Petersburg Times for the series "For Their Own Good," which tells the stories of men abused as children when they were in the Florida School for Boys and how they have coped since.
The awards will be presented Tuesday April 27 in a program that lasts from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism's World Room at 116th Street and Broadway
in New York City.
The presentations will be followed by a panel discussion about "excavating the landscape of institutional and individual memory, how public institutions respond to profound moral challenges, and the craft of trauma storytelling."
In addition to Fink, the panelists will be Stephen Engelberg, managing editor, ProPublica; Ilena Silverman, story editor, The New York Times Magazine; Ben Montgomery, reporter, St. Petersburg Times; and Edmund D. Fountain, Photographer, St. Petersburg Times.

The annual Dart Awards are funded by the Dart Foundation of Mason, Mich., to recognize "exemplary journalism on the impact of violence, crime, disaster and other traumatic events on individuals, families and communities." The awards are administered by the Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma at the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia.
