By: Jennifer Saba Advertising revenue for Q3 grew 2.4% to $12 billion, helped by strong online revenue gains, according to the Newspaper Association of America. Advertising revenue for print only increased 1.6% to $11.4 billion while online ad revenue jumped 26.7% to $518.9 million compared to the same period last year.
For print only, retail advertising revenue for the quarter grew slightly up 0.9% to $5.3 billion. National adverting dropped 4.7% to $1.8 billion due to declines in telecommunications, travel, and movie advertising. Classified advertising grew 5.5% to $4.2 billion.
Within the classified category, real estate was up 13.1% to $1.2 billion. Help wanted advanced 12.3% to $1.2 billion. Auto was down 4.8% to $1 billion. Other classified revenue was down slightly, 0.1% to $698 million.
For the first nine months, total print and online ad spending grew 2.9% to $35.1 billion. Total print ad spending rose 2% to $33.6 billion. For print only, classified was up 4.8% to $12 billion. Retail increased 1.7% to $15.8 billion. National was down 2.7% to $5.8 billion.
For the first nine months for print only within the classified category, help wanted was up 13.5% to $3.6 billion. Real estate rose 7.1% to $3.1 billion. Automotive declined 5% to $3.2 billion. Other classified grew 4.3% to $2 billion.
