By: E&P Staff The Herald and Weekly Times Pty Ltd., Melbourne, Australia, reported far fewer waste copies since installing a QuadTech Register Guidance System with MultiCam on its six MAN Roland Newsman 40 presses last year.
The News Ltd.-owned company prints The Herald Sun (circulation 590,000), the Sunday Herald Sun (circulation 680,000), The Weekly Times and other local and niche newspapers, tabloid and broadsheet, ranging from 12 to 128 pages.
Installation of the Register Guidance System with MultiCam helped streamline print production by automating formerly manual register control, "allowing the printers to focus on ink film weight and color balance across all pages," Production Operations Manager Neil Wood said in a statement. Woods added that QuadTech's equipment "monitors and controls register throughout the entire run, playing a significant role in keeping our advertising customers happy by eliminating blurred images."
The system introduced efficiencies that reduced start-up and running waste an operation that sees approximately 300 high-speed reel splices each day. Waste per press that used to average as high as 2,000 copies during start-up now regularly hits a target of 1,200 copies.
