Quartz editor-in-chief Katherine Bell has announced that Francesca Donner is joining Quartz as executive editor for Quartz at Work. In this role, she’ll oversee Quartz’s coverage of the transformation of the modern workplace and the future of work; manage the Quartz at Work team; and lead the development of new products and services that help readers make their careers more purposeful and sustainable, and their workplaces more inclusive, empathetic and innovative.
Donner joins Quartz from The New York Times, where she was editor of women and gender and a founding member of The Times Gender Initiative. She edited In Her Words, a three times weekly column examining politics, economics, business and culture through a gender lens. This past year, Donner and her team explored the unfurling childcare disaster and the toll of unpaid work on employment. They followed the paths of Orthodox Jewish women hoping to become EMTs and Afghan women who’d resettled in the U.S. They looked at whether a rise in remote work created a decline in workplace harassment, (it did not), and if working from home has been doubly hard for women of color (it has).
Before focusing on gender, she spent two years overseeing Times Insider, an editorial series designed to bring readers behind the scenes at the Times. And before she joined the NYT, Donner was a deputy editor at The Wall Street Journal, where she covered work and management, worked on digital newsroom strategy, and launched new verticals aimed at expats and professional women.
Donner grew up in the U.K. and is a graduate of Brown University and Stanford University’s master's program in journalism. She starts at Quartz in late October, based in northwest Connecticut.
