By: Staff reports New Media Division Reports Increased Revenue
Quebecor Inc., the Canadian publishing and broadcasting group, reported the company's
first-quarter profits were $15.5 million and earnings-per-share were $0.24. Profits in
the year-ago period were $15.4 million.
The earnings came from continuing operations worth $9.1 million and $6.4 million from
the sale of Donohue Inc. to Abitibi-Consolidated, a newsprint manufacturer.
The Montreal-based company's newspaper division, Sun Media Corp., reported increased
operating income rose 42%. Sun Media's revenues of $135.7 million were up 13.5% from
1999. Canada's second largest newspaper group includes the Toronto Sun and Calgary Sun.
Quebecor reported its new media segment as generating revenue worth $16.3 million in the
first quarter, with operating income losses of $3.2 million.
