By: E&P Staff Miami-based Quipp Systems sold two Packman packaging systems to the Austin (Texas) American-Statesman -- the first purchase within Cox Newspapers of Quipp's stack/wrap/print/strap machine - and three Packman systems to the Chicago Sun-Times, where they are to be installed in the fourth quarter at the paper's Chicago facility.
Another Sun-Times News Group unit, Fox Valley Press, Plainfield, Ill., contracted with Quipp for an inserter rebuilding and relocation project for the fourth quarter. The rebuilt 12:2 inserter will include the Missed Insert Repair System and Quipp Newscom 6 insert management control system. Storing data at the individual package level, Newscom 6 offers configurable software to track misses, doubles, rejects, and unopened jackets; flexibility for back-up repair, reject, feather, or group hoppers; and complex zone control, real-time monitoring, and management reports.
In other business, E.W. Scripps' Record Searchlight, Redding, Calif., bought from Quipp an SLS-1000 Inserter expansion consisting of a remanufactured two-feeder module inserter expansion, with vacuum shuttle. Feeders will include air-blast kits to better handle single sheets. Installation is slated for the fourth quarter.
Last year, the paper (which also runs two Quipp Model 501 narrow stackers) purchased a new complete feeder, which was installed on its SLS-1000 inserter -- a project that included electrical, new clutch and single-sheet air-blast kit.
Quipp also announced availability of inserter safety enhancement kits that also help reduce noise.
