By: Joe Strupp Now that newly anointed Executive Editor Howell Raines and Managing Editor Gerald M. Boyd have taken control of The New York Times, they hope to infuse new excitement into the paper's spot-news coverage, Boyd told E&P.

With the Sept. 6 issue of the Times marking the first produced with Raines and Boyd in their new roles, the new M.E. said few major changes are expected in the paper right away. But he hinted that it is hoped that readers will see more attention paid to jumping on breaking stories.

"Howell has talked about the need to be a little quicker on breaking news, and more mobile," Boyd said.

Raines, the paper's former editorial page editor who replaced the retired Joseph Lelyveld, could not be reached for comment.

Boyd, who was promoted from deputy managing editor to take over for former M.E. Bill Keller, said he realizes he and Raines are "inheriting a great newspaper," but believes improvements can always be made.
