By: E&P Staff The News & Observer in Raleigh, N.C., has contracted with Penske Logistics to truck copies to its nine distribution centers in four counties and drop-off sites outside those counties beginning next month, eliminating 17 full-time and 58 part-time jobs.
A report in the N&O quoted Publisher Orage Quarles III saying in a memo to staffers that "Penske is expected to hire many of those losing their jobs with The N&O."
Circulation Vice President Jim Puryear said the independent contractors who deliver the paper to customers will not be affected. He said the deal with Penske is cost-neutral in the short term but should save money in the future.
Of the N&O's 61 trucks, it will sell 47 and lease the rest to Penske, according to Puryear.
Based in Reading, Pa., Penske Logistics already serves two McClatchy Co. dailies, The Fresno (Calif.) Bee and The Kansas City (Mo.) Star.
