By: E&P Staff CCI Europe, Arhus, Denmark, has announced an agreement to add The News & Observer in Raleigh, N.C., to The McClatchy Co. NewsGate data center (E&P Online, Jan. 8). Raleigh also will serve as the system's disaster-recovery site.
With 190 users, the N&O is the third McClatchy daily to sign onto the data center, which is now live at the company's Charlotte (N.C.) Observer and is to include The Herald in Rock Hill, S.C.
The center is part of McClatchy's strategy to enhance news coverage for readers and Web users for its seven newspapers in the Carolinas, while improving efficient resource use. The group plans to use the NewsGate data center for its expanding package of shared content among the newspapers, including a shared integration with McClatchy Interactive, which provides the Internet publishing platform to all McClatchy newspapers.
By allowing multiple newsrooms to exist within one NewsGate system, the data center will enable McClatchy newsrooms to share coverage, research and content plans, helping make the best use of staff resources for multiple papers. Besides stories, photos, graphics and active media content, the group will be able to share pages of common interest in areas such as features, sports and local news.
"We've been working cooperatively with Charlotte and Rock Hill newsrooms for a while, but we are expecting CCI NewsGate to make team coverage easier and more efficient, especially on big, fast-moving stories such as hurricanes, where getting up-to-the-minute information to readers is essential," N&O Editor John Drescher said in a statement.
