By: Joe Strupp Newspaper Enterprise Association editorial cartoonist Robert Ariail has won this year's Ranan Lurie United Nations Political Cartoon Award.
Ariail is the first American cartoonist to win first prize in the award's 10-year history. About 1,500 entries came in from around the world and were judged by a panel that included Nobel Laureate Dr. Elie Wiesel; the Foreign Minister of Egypt, Ahmed Aboul Gheit; and the Japanese and Nepalese ambassadors to the U.N.
Ariail takes home a $10,000 prize and a plaque to be awarded in the presence of the Secretary General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon.
The U.N. Correspondents Association and the U.N. Society of Writers & Artists present the award "in their desire to promote the highest standard of excellence in political cartoons depicting the spirit and principles of the U.N.," an announcement stated. It is named after internationally syndicated political cartoonist Ranan Lurie.
